Jayde
and the Many Holidays
Jayde
was a little Buddhist boy. His mom told him Buddhists were nice to
everyone, just for no reason at all. Buddhists did not like anyone
to suffer, so he should always try to help when needed.
Not
one of his friends at school was a Buddhist but many were Christians.
so Jayde asked them what it meant to be a Christian. We do what Jesus
would have wanted us to do. Jayde asked what that would be exactly.
To his amazement Jesus must have been Buddhist too, because he said to
be nice to everyone, just for no reason at all. Christians did not
like to see people suffer, so he should always try to help when needed.
Ezra
was Jayde's friend, he was a Jew. So Jayde asked what it meant to
be a Jew. He thought and then said, Rabbi says we should be nice
to everyone, just for no reason at all. Jews did not like to see
people suffer so he should always help when needed.
Fatima
was a pretty girl Jayde liked and he asked her what it meant to be Muslim
as she was. She laughed having already heard him asked the other
children. "Well", she said, "we are nice to everyone even for no
reason at all and do not like to see people suffer and we should always
help when needed."
That
wonderful, thought Jayde we are all the same. It was winter and some
were having Christmas, some Hanukkah and some other kids were having holidays
and celebrations too. Jayde asked his mum, why do Buddhists not have
Christmas? His mum asked if he would like to celebrate Christmas.
"Very much" said Jayde. So he too had a tree and presents.
His friend Ezra invited him to Hannukah, even more yummy food.
It
was good to be Buddhist because it is perfectly fine to celebrate kindness
and goodness anytime and with anyone and obviously all the other religions
had the same basic teachings. Lucky Jayde.
Jayde
wondered why everyone was not getting along in the world because one religion
felt it was somehow better than another. It did not make sense because
they all thought the same things were important. His friends could
not figure that out either. so they made a promise not to forget
that as they got older and they would never be mean to anyone because their
teachings came from different religions, after all they are mostly the
same.
For
every year after that Jayde and his friends celebrated all each other's
religious ceremonies as well as their own, and in time, there were more
and more friends and even some grownups thinking the same way and celebrating
all holidays together. |
